Columbia, located at the heart of South Carolina, is one of the state's most influential cities, as well as its capital. With a rich heritage and strong military and academic presences, Columbia has thrived for hundreds of years.
Columbia was somewhat isolated and self-sustaining until the late 1700s when the Santee Canal was constructed, linking the Santee and Cooper rivers, giving settlers easy, safe and quick access to Charleston and back for the transport of goods and services. Over the years, Columbia saw destruction from the Civil War, but was reconstructed as a textile and manufacturing hub once the south's economy rebounded.
Today, Fort Jackson still stands and operates, as well as the University of South Carolina. Both of these were integral components of Columbia's development and have survived years of change, serving the community in various ways. Richland and Lexington County schools serve the youth of the area, as well as a number of private institutions.
Real estate in Columbia varies, catering to a multitude of buyers. There are mid-century ranches available at or under $100,000, which make for great starter homes. In the downtown area, singles and young professionals enjoy low-maintenance condominium living. There are a number of newer housing developments, each featuring its own amenities. Then, for those with a penchant for history, older, restored estates lie on the edge of Columbia's most vibrant area.
Residents can take advantage of a great, local park system. Those with children spend many afternoons at the famous Riverbanks Zoo. Historical sites like Fort Jackson National Cemetery and Trinity Episcopal Cathedral are among many fantastic things to see in Columbia.
